Former Boxing World Heavyweight Champion "Iron" Mike Tyson has recently gone through a rebirth, though not as a boxer. Tyson, who at one time was known as "The Baddest Man on the Planet," recently exposed his softer side with the documentary "Tyson" by indie filmmaker James Toback and then his comedic side with appearances on the Teen Choice Awards and the hit comedy "The Hangover." Tyson has even gone vegan and now has a reality television show on Animal Planet (yes Animal Planet) called "Taking On Tyson" about one of his favorite past-time hobbies, pigeon racing.
His transition to a George Foreman-esque good-will ambassador was quite amazing to watch but I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the days when Mike would just knock a fool out. FightSportTV's YouTube Channel has a great little highlight reel that brings me back to the days of a pre-Iron Mike, a Mike known as "Kid Dynamite."
My boy Paul put me on Canadian-based R&B group The Weeknd early this week. With a sound resembling The-Dream (Umbrella, Shorty You The Sh*t) I'm liking their style. Very sexy-time and I'm all about the sexy time. Check out this track, "The Morning" and if you want to test out more check out their Soundcloud page and then download their Mixtape "House of Balloons" at www.the-weeknd.com.
Yesterday, March 9, 2011, marked the fourteen year anniversary of the passing of Christopher Wallace also known as rapper "The Notorious B.I.G." He was shot to death in a drive-by shooting at the corner of Wilshire and La Brea in Los Angeles, California in 1997.
Last night a few blocks away at the El Rey Theatre, indie pop pixie Lykke Li performed her second show of the week to promote her recently released "Wounded Rhymes" album. Minutes before the Sweedish songstress took the stage an erie tribute to the fallen East Coast Rapper was played in the form of Kids And Explosions' incredible mashup "There Is A Burning Ball Of Fire In Outer Space" featuring Biggie's "Suicidal Thoughts" from his "Ready To Die" debut album, Sigur Ros' "Vaka / Untitled 1"from the "( )" album,Destiny's Child's "Survivor" from the same titled album and Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" of"Top Gun" fame.Check it!
Last night the Coachella 2011 lineup was released. As usual there's thousands of so-called fans complaining about the lineup throughout Facebook, Twitter and the Coachella Message Board. I personally am extremely excited for this lineup, especially for Arcade Fire and Kanye West. Check out some of my favorite tracks from Coachella '11 performers.
I'm loving the new Lykke Li track, "I Follow Rivers." After being a little underwhelmed by "Get Some" and "Paris Blue," this track really brought me back to why I love this Sweedish creature.
And definitely check out this remix by Electronic-Future Disco Pop producer The Magician. If the first version of this track doesn't make you dance then get a load of this:
"God Only Knows" is not just one of my favorite songs by The Beach Boys but it's also one of my all-time favorite songs, period! So simple and sweet. Check out this cover from Weezer front man Rivers Cuomo.
